Cardio vs Weights: What Should You Do First and Why?

The debate “Cardio vs Weights” is ever going. When an individual steps into the gym, the first question that generally pops into their head is what to do first, whether to hop on a treadmill or start with stretch and weights! Even though trainers can help with this, this knowledge is something that everyone must have!

“Should I start with cardio or weights?” It’s a classic dilemma- and the answer depends on our goals, our fitness level, and even the energy levels an individual possesses.

Let’s break it down scientifically, practically, and with the perspective of what works best for your body.

First Things First: Define Your Fitness Goals

Before deciding the sequence of your workout, i.e. what to start, along with the next steps, one should decide their primary goal, i.e. the exact aim!

The Science Behind It-

There are various studies that have shown that the order in which you train affects your performance. A study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research found that performing cardio before lifting reduced strength performance, especially for exercises like squats and deadlifts.

Another study in Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism explained the “interference effect”- stating “when cardio is done first, it can reduce the effectiveness of strength training due to neuromuscular fatigue.”

In short: the body performs best when the most demanding activity is done first.

Let us provide you with the whole sequence, as per your goals!

If Your Goal is Fat Loss

“Do weights first, then cardio”– Lifting weights helps build lean muscle mass, which boosts your metabolism and helps your body burn more calories even at rest. Starting with weights ensures that your energy is used for heavier lifts with better form.

Once you’ve tapped into your strength, doing cardio afterward can help maximize fat burn by using the body’s stored fat as fuel. It’s a great way to finish strong and burn those extra calories.

If Your Goal is Muscle Gain or Strength

“Always begin with strength training”- Of Course compound lifts or isolation exercises can help; however, your muscles and nervous system need to be fresh for maximum output. Doing cardio before lifting can leave you fatigued and compromise your ability to lift heavy or maintain good form. Thus, if your top priority is muscle building, then your energy needs to go toward lifting first.

If Your Goal is Endurance or Cardiovascular Performance

“Start with Cardio”- If you are training for a race, triathlon, or simply want to improve your heart health and stamina, then you must prioritize cardio when your energy levels are at their peak. You can still follow it with strength training to support overall fitness and prevent muscle imbalances, but cardio takes the front seat here.

The general rule still applies:

“Do what matters most to your goal first.”

If you care most about getting stronger, hit the weights first. If you want to build your endurance or burn fat through running or cycling, start with cardio. This way, your body has the best energy available for your main focus.
